Hello

Having been in the industry for twenty years, there have been times I had wished I had access to resources that could have helped me learn about the industry earlier. Learning about our industry through performances and tours left me with a lot of questions without answers and nowhere to turn to.

As I entered the mainstream performing arts world as an indian classical dancer, I found solace in being able to perform freely without a religious bias. But to do so while maintaining integrity, standard, pay tribute to not only to our ancestors but to the artform itself was really only possible after admitting to myself that the questions I had, were in fact “things” that needed to change in order to respect the classics (shout out to Pitt Dhirana!).

This blog will hopefully give you an insight to my thoughts on the current climate in the industry (based on my experience and observations), but also some direction to resources that in turn may be helpful to you. Feel free to share your thoughts as well. This is a safe space for artists to discuss their own opinions on topics shared.

I began Abhinayam in hopes to empower indian classical dancers so that they may find strength in attaining their passion on their own terms.

Forever your cheerleader,

Anita Vijay
